Madder Extract III is an extract made from Madder roots that contains mostly alizarin in free form, which makes it possible to obtain redder shades on all fibers than with Madder extract or ground Madder roots. Regular Madder extract and ground roots contain both alizarin in free form and bound to sugar (Rubythric acid). Free alizarin is not bound to Rubythric acid and gives redder shades, while alizarin bound to rubythric acid gives more orange shades.
I still used a good amount of Madder Extract III to dye the reddest skein in the listing pictures. I put about 2 Tbs of the extract in my dyepot with one 100 gram skein of yarn for the red, and then I got a few beautiful orange/peach/coral exhaust baths afterward. A lot of Madder is needed to dye a strong red. My skeins were pre-mordanted with Alum, but in Jenny Dean's book, Colours from Nature, she mentions that all fibers can be dyed with Madder and just a tannin mordant. However, I've also read that Madder will produce the best red with an alum mordant, and more subtle purplish hues by using an iron mordant in hard water than contains calcium.
Madder prefers hard water, so calcium carbonate, often referred to as 'chalk' by natural dyers, is the principle mineral to create hard water. So, add some chalk if you have soft water to deepen the shade.
Overheating a Madder dye bath results in browner, more orange tones.
Madder root dye is the source of 'Turkey red'. Madder is very light and wash fast.
