Symplocos is a dried leaf powder from the Symplocos cochinchinensis plant in Indonesia. The plant leaves are a natural bio-accumulator of aluminum. The leaves naturally store alum and the fallen leaves can be used and ground into a powder to be used as a plant-based source of alum for natural dyeing.

To mordant with Symplocos, use the amount of Symplocos that equals half the weight of the fiber you are dyeing (50% WOF).

Symplocos is a ground, powdered leaf, so if you are mordanting yarn, you may want to boil the Symplocos in water and then filter it out so you don't have the powdered bits in your yarn.

Boil the Symplocos in soft water for 30 minutes, then cool the water to 104 degrees and then add your yarn or fabric. Heat the solution back up to the simmering point and simmer for an hour. You can then handle the rinsing any way you like, so that you don't shock and felt your wool. Symplocos will have turned your fiber a pale yellow, and this will visually show you that the fiber is mordanted. I read that this yellow color will not influence the final color, but I haven't dyed a lot with Symplocos, so I don't want to say yet that it couldn't influenced it a little.

After mordanting your fiber you can proceed directly to dyeing with it, or you can dry and store it to dye later.
