Aluminum Triformate is a new mineral salts mordant that works well with room temperature water, as a cold water mordant.
Aluminum Triformate works for all natural fibers, wool, silk, cotton, linen and hemp, but for some colors on cotton and linen, Aluminum Acetate will give you better color, and is the better choice for mordant.
A cool water mordant is an advantage because you don't need to heat your mordant solution, which reduces the changing of temperature and agitation in hot water that could felt wool fibers. It is easy to reuse the mordant bath, since you aren't worried about needing to heat it each time, so it is easy to mordant bulk amounts in a bucket and have it outside.
The exhausted mordant bath can be put down municipal waste water systems.
You can calculate the amount of Aluminum Triformate you need, based on either grams per Liter or weight of fiber (WOF).
The recommended amount to use is: 20 grams per liter of water or 5-10% WOF. You can use a higher percent, which may give deeper colors for some dyes.
Leave your fibers in the mordant bath for several hours or overnight, and up to a few days.
