Alum Mordant Potassium Aluminum Sulfate for Natural Plant Dye for Yarn Protein Dyes Fiber Wool Silk Dyeing Printing Sulphate

from $9.99
Priced and sold by 2,4 or 8oz.

1oz only amounts to about 2 tablespoons worth or less, as this is a heavy, crystalline granule.

Potassium Aluminum Sulfate is recommended by teachers and authors of natural dyeing books to mordant fibers for natural dyes instead of regular Alum (Aluminum Sulfate) because they say that it gives brighter, stronger colors. It is a little more expensive than Aluminum Sulfate.

Directions for use are the same for both. It can also be used to pre-treat fabric or paper before marbling to ensure that designs transfer clearly.

For Fabric Marbling
Dissolve ¼ cup Alum in one gallon of warm water. Immerse fabric in solution until wet, wring out (do not rinse) and let air dry. Fabric will be ready to marble when dry, and it may be ironed before marbling.

For Paper Marbling
Dissolve ¼ cup of Alum in 1 quart of water. Spray or sponge on the solution to lightly coat the paper. Let dry completely before marbling.

An easy measurement to remember when dyeing with alum, is to just 1 Tbsp per skein. You can cool mordant with alum, by putting the alum and fiber into a bucket and making sure that there is plenty of room and water to move around the fiber and give the water a stir occasionally. Leave the fiber in for at least 24 hours, stirring occasionally. To re-use the mordant liquid, instead of throwing it out, you can just add 50% of the alum that you added the first time, for each skein. Keep a lid on it, and out of reach of children or pets, and it will stay clean.
