Giant Himalayan Stinging Nettle Top for Spinning Felting or Doll Hair Fiber Bast Fibers Undyed Plant Vegan
from $13.99
Priced and sold by 2, 4 or 8oz. Pick the quantity from the drop down box.
This is wild grown, Giant Himalayan Stinging Nettle fiber sold by the ounce. The fiber from this plant is reputed to be the longest stapled bast (plant) fiber known. The Himalayan stinging nettle grows wild every year in Nepal, and harvesting and processing the crop provides income for the local people.
Staple length, as pictured is about 7". This fiber has a tendency to want to come apart and be a bit 'fly away' and get all over. Plant fibers can be that way, but this one is especially because the 'combed top' preparation is very loose, and the fibers are not dense or packed together, they want to slide apart easily.
Himalayan Nettle has a unique property that makes it an ideal clothing material for both winter and summer. The fibers of the plant are hollow and can accumulate air inside creating a natural insulation. To create clothing material for
summer, the yarn length can be twisted closing the hollow core and reducing insulation. In winter with low twist the
hollow fiber remains open maintaining a constant temperature
I've lived where stinging nettles grew everywhere as a weed, so you can be sure that this plant is very prevalent, and a resource that is yearly renewed. If only I'd been a spinner when I had all those stinging nettles at hand!
This fiber is silky to the touch. It is stronger when wet like linen, with antibacterial properties, and less tendency to wrinkle.
It is a bast (plant) fiber and is vegan friendly, as well as earth friendly and sustainable. A DHG fiber.
