Lac Natural Plant Dye for Yarn Protein Dyes Earth Friendly Fiber Wool Silk Mordant Red Pink

from $18.99
Priced and sold by 1oz or 2 oz.

Lac extract is made from a scale insect, Laccifer lacca.. The insect is found throughout Asian countries and is both wild and cultivated. The female lac insects invade a host tree and secretes a resin that contains a red dye. The resin is harvested from the branches and is known as stick lac. To be useful as a day, the dye is separated from the resin, and is then referred to as lac extract.

Lac extract gives a range of reds from crimson to burgundies, to purples. Lac dye has high light and washfastness on wool and silk. The burgundy yarn shown in the picture is dyed with straight lac. The coral yarn, is dyed with lac and citric acid, which will brighten and give a more orange hue.

5-8% dye to WOF should be used for good color. Use 15% WOF for dyeing protein fibers and mordant with 8% tannin and then 15% alum for cellulose fabrics. Lac is not as light and washfast on cellulose fibers.

I include a sheet of information about how to immersion dye wool with lac.
