Madder Extract is an extract made from Madder roots that contains both alizarin in free form and bound to sugar (Rubythric acid). Free alizarin not bound to Rubythric acid gives redder shades (I sell Madder Extract III because it is mostly free alizarin). Alizarin bound to rubythric acid gives more orange shades.
A lot of Madder is needed to dye a strong red and if you want to dye red with Madder root, then I recommend buying Madder Extract III. It is usually said that pre-mordanting with an Alum mordant will give you the best reds when using Madder, but in Jenny Dean's book, Colours from Nature, she mentions that all fibers can be dyed with Madder and just a tannin mordant.
As with ground Madder root, you will obtain orangish reds, orange, peach and coral shades from Madder extract.
Madder prefers hard water, so calcium carbonate, often referred to as 'chalk' by natural dyers, is the principle mineral to create hard water. So, add some chalk if you have soft water to deepen the shade.
Overheating a Madder dye bath results in browner, more orange tones.
Madder root dye is the source of 'Turkey red'. Madder is very light and wash fast.
I will include an information sheet on dyeing with Madder Extract III.
