Dried, ground, powdered Madder root (rubia tinctoria). Dyeing with dried madder root actually produces a superior color, to fresh roots. Madder is used to dye both protein and plant fibers with the use of a mordant. Madder produces red, shades of orange, peach and coral.
Overheating a Madder dye bath results in browner, more orange tones.
Once the dye has been thoroughly extracted, the ground madder roots and the exhausted dye bath can be used as a reduction source for an indigo vat. They roots contain reducing sugars.
Madder root dye is the source of 'Turkey red'.
I will include an information sheet on dyeing with Madder.
