Quebracho grows in the Gran Chaco region of South America. Their are several species of Quebracho tree and the wood is quite heavy and extremely hard. The name is derived from the Spanish quebrar, to break, and hacha, an axe.

Quebracho has been important commercially because it contains tannins and has been used quite a lot in the tanning industry.

Quebracho can be used to dye protein fibers like wool and silk, as well as plant (cellulose) fibers. This regular quebracho, dyes tan and brown shades.
